Irish Travellers Artist Statement: I was intrigued, to my utmost curiosity, I began to study the travellers and try to build up some form of trust, once I gained this, I decided to document them in As a fine-art black and white documentary photographer who studied the medium at the Art Institute of Boston in , two decades of skills behind me gave me the confidence to photograph the Irish Travellers. Freckled-faced children, young women with long hair and bright make-up with large jewellery, scantily dressed, proudly displaying cleavage, men proudly portraying scars and tattoos, sometimes smeared with grease and dirt, bonfire, litter of rubbish and metal scraps, horses, caravans, horse trailers and vans became important elements in my photographs. Most importantly, their weather-beaten and sometime scarred faces provide hard evidence in their portraits and yet each person shows their hardship, history and uncertainty about their future in their eyes. It allows the viewers to see what I see exactly through the viewfinder of my camera when I press the shutter. To date, the Irish Travellers has become the most interesting and largest theme I have ever produced in my 3 decades as a photographic artist. In my works with the Travelling Community I have been following several clans; my goal is to continue to document these families as well as other members that I encounter on my journey. With a history dating back to pre-Celtic times the Irish Travellers are recognized as an ethnic group in Ireland, and sometimes called tinkers or gypsies, though they have nothing to do with the Romany gypsies.

The research by scientists from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University College Dublin, the University of Edinburgh and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, discovered that the divergence began years or approximately 12 generations ago. But a lack of documentary evidence on their history meant the origin of Irish Travellers was not clear, and the subject of debate. Previously it had been thought that Travellers had become displaced between and as a result of the Great Famine.

The study also found that genetically Travellers are closely connected to Irish settled people, scotching theories that they descended from other population groups including European Roma gypsies. The researchers found that any genetic disparities between Travellers and settled people here are largely due to them remaining genetically isolated for several centuries and their numbers decreasing.

In fact this social isolation has led to a few marked differences in the genomes of Irish Travellers when compared to the settled community. Several genetic dating methods were also used to estimate the period when the travelling community began to split genetically from the settled population in Ireland.

The research also established the degree to which marrying someone to which you are genetically related, a practice common among the Traveller community, can impact on the genetic blueprint, leading to an increased prevalence of certain disease including galactosaemia. Subtle genetic differences were also found between speakers of the Cant and Gammon dialects of the Traveller language. The findings, published in the Nature journal Scientific Reports, come three months after the Taoiseach committed to begin the process to have a distinct Traveller ethnicity officially recognised.

The study has been welcomed by Traveller groups, including Pavee Point, which said it confirmed what many had thought for some time about Traveller ethnicity pre-dating the famine. Irish Travellers split socially from settled people in s — study https:

But it will take the outcome of scientific analysis on the almost people whose remains were found in the excavation to reveal the complete story of the ringfort. With no previous record of any habitation on the site, about a mile north of Roscommon town, it was only when geophysics testing results came back that it was clear that there were significant archaeological features. After a year-long excavation that ended last October, including work by archaeologists through some of the worst storms in decades, a picture is emerging of the settlement that was probably occupied between the sixth and 11th centuries.

The remains of people were found, about three quarters of them were intact and the others were disarticulated.

Travellers are an indigenous ethnic minority group in Ireland with their own traditions, history, language and beliefs who traditionally were nomadic. Irish Travellers are an indigenous nomadic ethnic group with a long established past in Irish history dating back to at least the 12th century. Traditionally Travellers played a vital role in an agrarian society, with niche roles as seasonal agrarian labourers, tinsmiths, Bards, poets- providing services as needed to a settled rural population.

Travellers were nomadic for either part or all of the year, reflecting different family patterns and trades, but were characterised by their living in extended families. These changes had profound consequences for Travellers, in that roles which Travellers played in Irish society were rapidly replaced. These roles not only provided income and status for Travellers within Irish society but also supported nomadism as an expression of identity.

Travellers, like many settled people, responded to these rapid societal changes by moving in large numbers from rural areas to larger urban centres in search of work.

Email Copy Link Copied It probably won’t come as a huge shock to you to learn that there are large numbers of gypsies still living in the UK – the most recent figures estimate there are around , – however, what you may not know is that there are actually two different types. Roma Gypsies, who originate from northern India, and then those from Ireland, who are usually referred to as Travellers nowadays.

Both groups are nomadic, and both remain pretty secretive about their way of life; perhaps not surprising considering they often face discrimination from the wider community, particularly in the case of Irish Travellers, despite their being recognized as an ethnic group and therefore protected under the Race Relations Act since

We’ve been slow on the updates here on ShowBiz. Well, in our 15 years we’ve never known Dublin to be a town so devoid of an exclusive social scene and the celebrity conveyor belt seems to have slowed to a stop. Sure, we haven’t had a new one in nigh on three years. Friday night saw some familiar faces looking to sample curries of red, green, and yellow We spotted Six Nations champ Gordon Darcy leaving Today FM’s Ray Darcy show yesterday missing about 2 stone of awesome celtic beardage and sporting a rather nice new rain coat.

Now, we’re not sure what vibe he’s going for but the trendy garment reminded us of a green wax version of the jackets the brave Bering Sea trawler men wear on The Deadliest Catch tv show. Has the Irish weather got that bad folks? There was an unidentified singing superstar hanging around Dublin over past week with her mogul rapper husband and their wee cute baby girl. Yet, no one in Ireland knew who they were?

Little did we know when we spotted the big sparkler on ShowBiz. Off to buy a new hat for the ‘Jackeen’ wedding in Limerick where, we’re sure, there’ll be a Horse Outside If you happen by the Grand Canal at Baggot Street Bridge you might spot the benched contemplative gentleman in the ruby red slippers.
